First published in Lord of Samarcand and Other Adventure Tales of the Old Orient (University of Nebraska Press, 2005).

An early draft was published as “The Way of the Swords” in The Road of Azrael (Donald M. Grant, 1979).

Rewritten by L. Sprague De Camp as a Conan story titled “Conan, Man of Destiny” and later retitled “The Road of the Eagles,” first published in Tales of Conan (Gnome Press, 1955).

The Shadow of the Vulture

First published in The Magic Carpet Magazine, January 1934.

Features Red Sonya of Rogatino. Roy Thomas adapted this story for comics in Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian issue 23 (February 1973), rewriting it as a Conan story and introducing Red Sonja, who went on to be a recurring character and later to star in her own comic book series.
